Exciting rumors are swirling that some classic Twisted Metal titles could be making a return with a new re-release in 2025, as hinted by the voice actor of one of the franchise's most beloved characters. The original Twisted Metal launched on the PlayStation in 1995, immersing players in a dark realm of intense vehicular combat featuring an array of colorful and deadly drivers.

The game was a significant commercial success, leading to multiple sequels and pioneering a genre of demolition derby games that have tried to emulate its unique formula with varying results.

After a reboot in 2012 for the PS3, the Twisted Metal series entered a hiatus. However, interest surged again following the premiere of a live-action series on Peacock last summer, despite the absence of any new game announcements since then.

Reports indicated that Firesprite was working on a new live-service Twisted Metal game, but that project was ultimately shelved due to significant layoffs at Sony earlier this year.

While there may not be new Twisted Metal games on the immediate horizon, fans could soon get the chance to relive classic entries on modern platforms. J.S. Gilbert, who voiced the infamous ice cream truck driver Sweet Tooth in several older Twisted Metal titles, recently responded to a Reddit user's post suggesting rumors of a “special release” featuring Twisted Metal: Head-On, Twisted Metal 2, and Twisted Metal: Black. According to Gilbert, these classic games are being “refreshed” for a bundle slated for release in 2025.

Gilbert also expressed his willingness to reprise his role as Sweet Tooth in a new Twisted Metal game, although he suspects that Will Arnett may take on the character again, following his portrayal in the Twisted Metal TV series. This mention of Arnett being potentially cast in the games is new, but it could leverage the show's success to attract fresh players, even if it creates a divide among long-time fans.

As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding any new Twisted Metal projects, whether it be a new game or a remastered collection of classic titles like Twisted Metal: Black or Twisted Metal: Head-On. With 2025 marking the 30th anniversary of the original Twisted Metal, a nostalgic re-release would certainly feel appropriate.
