A recent rumor suggests that the iconic Greek-era God of War games might be making their way to modern gaming systems in time for the franchise's 20th anniversary. Originally launched in 2005 by Sony’s Santa Monica Studios on the PlayStation 2, God of War introduced players to the intense saga of the vengeful Spartan warrior, Kratos, and set a high standard for action games that followed. Over the years, the series has expanded with numerous sequels across various platforms, culminating in 2022’s God of War: Ragnarok.
During the PS3 era, Sony re-released earlier God of War titles through remastered collections, offering fans a convenient way to engage with Kratos’s dark journey of revenge against Ares, Zeus, and the rest of the ancient Greek gods. However, only God of War III (released in 2010) was made available on the PS4. This limited accessibility has left many gamers unable to experience earlier installments without a PS Plus subscription. Moreover, handheld spin-offs like Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta remain unavailable.
That could soon change, according to a rumor from Need4Games, as reported by Comicbook. An insider known as "Lunatic Ignus" has claimed on Discord that several remasters of God of War are in development for the PS5. These would reportedly include the three main entries, the aforementioned portable titles, and the 2013 prequel, God of War: Ascension. The remasters are said to be managed by Nixxes, a developer specializing in PC ports, with an announcement expected in March 2025 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise.
It's important to note that this information is based on a rumor from an unverified source, so fans eager to revisit the classic God of War games should temper their excitement for now. However, there has been a noticeable uptick in PlayStation remasters and re-releases recently, with a remaster of 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn set to debut on PS5 later this month. Given that most classic God of War titles are not accessible on current systems, a remaster of these games seems increasingly justified, particularly compared to titles that can be played via the PS5’s backward compatibility.
The God of War series has also experienced a revival in recent years, particularly with the releases of 2018’s God of War and God of War: Ragnarok. These titles serve as a sort of soft reboot, drawing on Norse mythology and attracting a new wave of fans who may have missed the original Greek saga. If these rumored remasters come to fruition, they could offer new players the chance to explore Kratos's violent origins and backstory, bridging the gap between the classic and modern iterations of the series.
