Julian Gerighty, the creative director behind Star Wars Outlaws, has acknowledged the harshness of the game's early insta-fail stealth missions, admitting that they are "unfair." In response to player feedback, a patch is in the works to ease the difficulty of these sections.
Unlike recent Star Wars games that feature Jedi protagonists like Cal Kestis, Outlaws offers a fresh take by placing players in the shoes of Kay Vess, a scoundrel without Force powers. Naturally, Kay has to depend on her resourcefulness rather than brute strength to overcome challenges.
From the outset, it was clear that Star Wars Outlaws would deliver a different experience, but many players were caught off guard by the significant emphasis on stealth. The issue became even more problematic with the punishing insta-fail segments in the game’s early stages, which frustrated players before they had even mastered the game’s mechanics.
Since Star Wars Outlaws launched last week, players have voiced their dissatisfaction with the unforgiving stealth mechanics, particularly during missions where getting caught leads to immediate failure. In response to this widespread criticism, Outlaws creative director Julian Gerighty revealed in an interview with GamesRadar that the development team is working on adjustments.
Gerighty acknowledged that one mission on Mirogana has been particularly troublesome for players, describing it as "incredibly punishing." He admitted that it was a "mistake" on the team’s part and confirmed that they are actively working on solutions. While the instant failure mechanic may not be entirely removed, Gerighty noted that there are planned changes to make these stealth sections more "enjoyable."
It’s not just the players who feel the difficulty spike is unfair—Gerighty himself conceded that the stealth segments are unintentionally brutal. Fortunately, the upcoming patch, expected in about 10 days, is aimed at balancing the difficulty and reducing the frustration players are currently experiencing.
Although the initial stealth sequences can be tough to navigate, it’s important to remember that Outlaws gradually expands its gameplay, giving Kay and her companion Nix more tools and abilities to even the odds. While many players have been deterred by these early challenges, there’s hope that they will return to the game once the patch makes these sections less punishing.
By addressing player feedback and softening the difficulty, Ubisoft aims to ensure that Star Wars Outlaws remains an enjoyable experience for all.
