Exciting whispers are circulating about a potential remaster of the 2019 open-world zombie game Days Gone for PlayStation 5. Despite its mixed reviews upon release—a rarity for a major first-party PlayStation title—the game sold over 7 million copies. However, Sony seems uninterested in pursuing a sequel.
Reports indicate that concepts for a Days Gone sequel were turned down by Sony, leading developer Bend Studio to focus on a new intellectual property. While hopes for Days Gone 2 appear dim, the original game may soon receive renewed attention if the latest rumors hold true.
The speculation around a Days Gone remaster gained traction when VGC's Jordan Middler responded to Jeff Grubb's assertion that Sony was working on a PS5 remaster, which was said to be less exciting than the rumored Horizon Zero Dawn remaster. In a tweet, Middler hinted that Days Gone could be the title in question, noting that the game’s director would be taken aback by such an announcement, especially after his negative reaction to the character Deacon St. John appearing in Astro Bot.
In Astro Bot, players can discover over 100 cameo appearances from various PlayStation franchises, including Deacon St. John from Days Gone. However, the game's director, John Garvin, expressed his displeasure at this cameo, dismissing Astro Bot as a "small game." It will be intriguing to see his reaction if a remaster is indeed announced.
Fans may not have to wait long to confirm the existence of the Days Gone PS5 remaster. Both this remaster and the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster are rumored to be unveiled during an upcoming PlayStation State of Play event, potentially coinciding with the 2024 Tokyo Game Show.
Previously, Days Gone received a PS5 update that improved its performance on the new hardware, although this update is not equivalent to a full remaster. It remains unclear what a remaster would add. It might showcase the PS5 Pro's capabilities or utilize the console’s hardware in ways the current update does not. Regardless, fans should remain cautious and await official confirmation before getting their hopes up for a full comeback of Days Gone on Sony’s latest platform.
