Markus Persson, known as 'Notch,' the original creator of the beloved sandbox game Minecraft, has shared that the iconic creative mode was nearly omitted from the game. Released in 2011, Minecraft has earned widespread acclaim and is often hailed as one of the greatest video games of all time. However, the game's landscape might have looked very different had Notch decided against including its widely cherished creative mode.
Currently, Notch is focusing on a new, unnamed project at his studio, Bitshaft Entertainment. His rise to fame began in 2009 when he unveiled the first public test build of Minecraft, which has since become the best-selling video game ever, with over 300 million copies sold.
In 2014, Notch sold Mojang Studios, the company behind Minecraft, to Microsoft for an astounding $2.5 billion. While Minecraft continues to receive regular content updates, Notch no longer contributes to its ongoing development.
Though Notch seldom discusses Minecraft nowadays, a recent tweet revealed that creative mode almost didn't make it into the game's final version. When a Twitter user asked about a time a game benefited from developer fan advice, Notch referenced Minecraft, explaining that he initially didn’t plan to include creative mode. It was only after witnessing the impressive building skills of players that he changed his mind.
In a separate interaction, a Twitter user sought Notch's opinion on recent updates to Minecraft. He expressed his appreciation for the visual design of "the creaking," a new hostile mob exclusive to the pale garden biome. While fans can experience this eerie mob and biome through the latest snapshot release, Mojang Studios has yet to announce an official release date for the upcoming content update.
Although Minecraft’s creative mode might not receive the attention it deserves in terms of new features, it’s undeniable that the game would not have reached its current heights without it. Notch's comments also ignited discussions within the Minecraft community regarding Mojang Studios' responsiveness to player feedback.
While opinions on this topic vary, the studio recently announced significant adjustments to its update schedule, committing to deliver new content more frequently in response to community requests.
