Introducing Reforj, a newly unveiled open-world multiplayer game that echoes the beloved aesthetics and gameplay of Minecraft. Developed by 4J Studios—renowned for its extensive history of porting Minecraft—this title promises to bring a fresh take to the genre.
With Minecraft being one of the most ported games of the 21st century, 4J Studios has played a significant role in that success. From 2012 to 2017, this Dundee, Scotland-based developer successfully adapted Minecraft for platforms including the Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch. Following that period, the studio ventured into new territory with Manic Mechanics, a quirky couch co-op game that saw a multi-platform release in 2023.
4J Studios has now announced its next endeavor: Reforj, a multiplayer survival game set in procedurally generated open worlds. The developer shared pre-alpha footage showcasing Reforj's blocky visual style, which evokes strong comparisons to Minecraft, particularly in its procedural mechanics and environments. However, unlike Minecraft, which utilizes polygon graphics, Reforj will be built with voxel graphics.
To bring this vision to life, 4J Studios is utilizing its proprietary Elements Engine, specifically designed to power voxel-based sandbox experiences. The engine was first introduced in May 2024, with Reforj set to be its inaugural showcase.
In terms of gameplay, Reforj invites players to navigate a challenging environment by constructing shelters, forming settlements, and scavenging for vital resources. Players will also have the opportunity to explore the ruins of ancient civilizations and face off against various mobs.
The pre-alpha footage highlights some exciting mechanics, including wingsuits that allow players to cover vast distances quickly. While the user interface and building system might initially resemble those of Minecraft, a notable distinction is Reforj's detailed minimap. Additionally, the game encourages creativity by allowing players to sculpt blocks, rather than simply placing them.
As of now, there is no set release date for Reforj, but 4J Studios has confirmed plans to launch the game on PlayStation, Xbox consoles, and PC. Given that the Elements Engine is tailored for next-gen experiences and considering it’s already 2024, it seems unlikely that Reforj will be available on older platforms like PS4 and Xbox One.
