At Minecraft Live 2024, Mojang revealed some intriguing lore about Steve, who is now considered a monster within the game's universe. Players explore a world filled with various creatures, including animals, monsters, and villagers, but Steve stands out as the only human presence in this expansive sandbox.
The journey began with the introduction of a mob labeled "human" in version rd-132328. As the game evolved, Steve became the official player model and is now recognized as the most iconic of Minecraft's default skins, frequently appearing in official artwork. However, while players are familiar with Steve's gameplay role, much of the lore surrounding his character has remained a mystery, leading to numerous theories about his existence in the Minecraft world.
The revelation that Steve is canonically viewed as a monster came during Minecraft Live 2024, where a cinematic showcased villagers navigating a dark forest. They warned one another to be cautious of dangers, including “zombies, skeletons, and Steve.” Adding a humorous touch to the scene, one villager even held up a photo of Steve while they discussed a newly spotted creature in the woods.
In the Reddit comments section following user JPmagic_'s post, many users reacted with humor to the notion that villagers perceive Steve as a threat, similar to skeletons and other hostile mobs. One comment pointed out the logic behind their fear, noting that Steve's appearance is drastically different from that of the villagers and that he possesses abilities like alchemy and “opening a portal to hell.” Other commenters shared jokes about the antics players often engage in with villagers, suggesting that their fear of Steve is well-founded.
Alongside the surprising lore about Steve, the cinematic presentation at the event also introduced a new biome and mob. After leaks emerged a few days before Minecraft Live 2024, Mojang officially unveiled the Pale Garden—a biome characterized by its eerie, pale colors that become particularly ominous at night.
This unsettling atmosphere is amplified by the introduction of the new hostile mob known as the Creaking, which resembles a tree, making it easy to overlook. Despite the excitement surrounding these announcements, Mojang has not yet provided a release date for the Pale Garden and the Creaking, promising that more details will be shared soon.
