PlayStation has announced a free update for Astro Bot, set to arrive later this year, that will introduce exciting new content to the already beloved platformer. Astro Bot has been a standout release in 2024, earning high praise from both players and critics, with some even hailing it as one of the best 3D platformers of all time.
Despite its success, one common critique of Astro Bot is its relatively short playtime, with dedicated players able to earn the Platinum Trophy in under 20 hours. Acknowledging this desire for more content, PlayStation had previously confirmed that Astro Bot would receive additional updates post-launch, and fans now have a glimpse of what's coming next.
During the latest State of Play event, PlayStation unveiled a new Astro Bot trailer that highlights what fans can expect in the upcoming free update, scheduled for fall 2024. The update will introduce five new online speedrun levels and 10 additional bots to rescue. Players can look forward to themed levels, including a water and ice stage and a jungle level reminiscent of Donkey Kong’s iconic wooden barrels. Among the new VIP bots are Eve from Stellar Blade and what appears to be four distinct Helldivers, adding even more crossover fun to Astro Bot’s universe.
As fans eagerly await the update, now is a great time to make sure all VIP bots in the current game have been collected. Astro Bot boasts over 300 bots to rescue, with 169 of them featuring special appearances from various PlayStation franchises. Those who play through Astro's Playroom can add four extra VIP bots, bringing the total to 173.
With Astro Bot receiving such glowing reviews, it remains to be seen whether this upcoming update will mark the end of content support or if developer Team Asobi has additional surprises in store. Although this update is free, the possibility of paid DLC in the future is intriguing, especially with the potential to introduce even more iconic PlayStation characters. Notable absentees, like Insomniac’s Spider-Man, would undoubtedly be a hit among fans willing to invest in extra content, sparking speculation about what might come next for Astro Bot.
This latest update promises to keep the excitement alive and expand the Astro Bot experience even further, making it a must-play for fans and newcomers alike.
