Metaphor: ReFantazio has just achieved an ESRB rating, indicating that the game is on track for its anticipated launch and is unlikely to face any delays. Scheduled for release on October 11 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, players can already dive into the demo, which offers an impressive five hours of gameplay.
Atlus established Studio Zero in 2016, led by the visionary Katsura Hashino, known for his work on the Persona series. The studio has since been developing a title initially codenamed Project Re Fantasy, which has now been unveiled as Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Following its initial announcement, fans quickly recognized striking similarities between Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona, especially since Hashino directed both games. However, despite the shared gameplay elements, Metaphor: ReFantazio is poised to establish its unique identity in the gaming landscape.
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), responsible for classifying video games in North America, has officially rated Metaphor: ReFantazio as "Teen," making it suitable for players aged 13 and older. The rating summary provides insight into the RPG’s portrayal of blood and violence, highlighting that such content appears right at the beginning of the extensive demo. Additionally, the summary notes the presence of alcohol references and strong language.
Among the classifications, mild suggestive themes are noted, which include verbal or visual sexual implications, primarily found in certain NPC dialogues. Importantly, since the game does not include romantic relationships with the protagonist’s companions, these suggestive conversations appear to be side interactions rather than central to the main story. The summary also mentions the various monsters players will encounter, which may lead to “cries of pain” during combat.
The ESRB rating plays a crucial role in defining the target audience and managing expectations regarding the game's themes. In the past, some titles have received different age ratings across platforms due to developers modifying content for specific audiences. However, Metaphor: ReFantazio will retain its Teen rating across all platforms, maintaining the themes outlined in the summary.
Ultimately, what matters most is that Atlus's highly anticipated JRPG is closer than ever to release, allowing fans to experience it in full soon. The developer is committed to resolving any outstanding issues with Metaphor: ReFantazio prior to launch, ensuring that players enjoy the best possible experience, regardless of their chosen platform.
