In Black Myth: Wukong, players have access to a diverse range of spells and transformations to aid the Destined One in his journey. While some of these abilities are unlocked through story progression, others require extra effort to discover. One such powerful transformation is the Ashen Slumber, which turns the player into a formidable Two-Headed Rat Guai. However, obtaining this transformation involves completing a short, easily missable quest.
This guide will take you step by step through how to unlock the Ashen Slumber Transformation, even if you've overlooked it during your first playthrough.
To begin your quest for the Ashen Slumber Transformation, head to Sandgate Village in Chapter Two. Start at the Village Entrance Shrine and follow the path into the village. However, instead of going toward the boss battle arena for the Second Prince of the Flowing Sands, make your way up the hill. There, you’ll find a small house with a rock blocking the entrance.
Approach the hut and initiate a conversation with the NPC inside. Continue the dialogue until the NPC repeats a line about someone heading to The New West. Once you've exhausted the conversation, your next step is to progress in the story.
After defeating the Yellow Wind Sage and advancing to Chapter Three, you will eventually reach the Pagoda Realm. Inside, you'll come across the Third Rat Prince, imprisoned in a cell next to yours. However, the door is sealed by a purple lock, which you need to remove to access the Rat Guai.
To unlock these purple-sealed doors, you must defeat Captain Lotus-Vision, located near the Upper Pagoda Shrine. Once the captain is defeated, all the purple seals will be lifted throughout the Pagoda Realm. Return to the Third Rat Prince’s cell, and there, you’ll find the Ashen Slumber Transformation by interacting with the corpse of the Two-Headed Rat Guai.
If you've already completed Chapter Three by defeating the four Captains and finishing the Third Rat Prince’s quest, you might not find the Rat Guai’s body in his cell. In this case, you’ll need to battle the Two-Headed Rat Guai directly to earn the transformation.
Return to Sandgate Village in Chapter Two and speak with the NPC in the hut as described earlier. Then, head back to the Pagoda Realm. Starting at the Upper Pagoda Shrine, follow the path to the left until you reach the edge of a cliff. Jump down, where you'll encounter a Red Yaksha.
From there, look for an opening on your right, leading to a hall. Inside, you’ll find the Two-Headed Rat Guai standing before a stone table. Engaging with the Rat Guai will trigger a boss fight. Once you defeat it, you’ll unlock the Ashen Slumber Transformation.
The Two-Headed Rat Guai wields a sword and frequently emits smoke from one of its heads. Be cautious of the smoke, as the Rat Guai can ignite it, triggering a massive explosion that deals heavy damage and inflicts the Scorch Bane status on the Destined One.
The key to success in this battle is to maintain distance from the smoke, allowing it to ignite before you get close. Utilize the Immobilize Spell to freeze the boss, giving you a window to deal significant damage.
The Rat Guai’s melee attacks are fairly easy to predict and dodge. However, once you've dealt enough damage, it will ignite its sword, further enhancing its attacks and applying Scorch Bane with each hit.
For a quicker victory, use the Red Tides Transformation to deal substantial damage without worrying about the boss’s explosive abilities in the later stages of the fight.
Once the Two-Headed Rat Guai is defeated, it will stab itself, and interacting with its corpse will reward you with the Ashen Slumber Transformation. As the Two-Headed Rat Guai, you'll gain access to a unique set of abilities:
Chop Wood
This is your light attack, allowing you to swing your sword for physical damage. It’s also the primary way to generate Focus, which is needed for your heavy attack.
Blow Fire
Holding the heavy attack button will consume Focus while unleashing a stream of fire, dealing damage and applying Scorch Bane to enemies. This attack has a decent range and can pin down foes.
Fiery Burst
The Fiery Burst is your ultimate ability. It uses all your remaining Might, causing you to self-destruct and deal immense damage in a large area. After the explosion, you'll revert to the Destined One. This powerful spell is best saved for critical moments.
By mastering the Ashen Slumber Transformation, you'll add a deadly new form to your arsenal, capable of decimating foes and turning the tide of battle in your favor.
