Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree may have provided answers to many of the community’s lingering questions, but players are still grappling with one particular enigma from a visual that appeared before the DLC's release. Known for its intricate world-building, FromSoftware has a reputation for shrouding its narratives in mystery, often concealing critical details in item descriptions or hidden locations. While die-hard fans relish unraveling these secrets, casual players often find Elden Ring's story complex and, at times, impenetrable.
On Reddit, user Circles-of-the-World sparked debate by asking for clarification about a scene in the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer, where Marika is seen reaching into a mysterious chunk of flesh. This peculiar image has ignited speculation among fans.
Some believe the flesh to be the corpse of the Fell God, a being Marika is said to have defeated. However, this remains speculative, as no official confirmation has been provided. The ongoing mystery around this pile of flesh has led some in the community to believe that FromSoftware might have intended to shed light on this scene in a potential second DLC.
The ambiguity of Marika's interaction with the flesh has left fans frustrated, with many doubting that FromSoftware will ever offer an explanation. While the studio is under no obligation to clarify every aspect of its esoteric storytelling, the inclusion of what feels like a red herring in the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer has puzzled many, especially since other lingering questions about Elden Ring were addressed in the DLC. To add to the frustration, it seems unlikely that FromSoftware will ever delve deeper into the mystery surrounding Marika’s flesh encounter.
Following the success of Shadow of the Erdtree, FromSoftware announced that it has no plans for additional expansions for the popular RPG. Despite this, the studio hinted at the possibility of returning to the franchise in the future, either through a sequel or a spinoff. However, if a follow-up project does materialize, it's uncertain whether a minor detail from a DLC trailer would be a priority for the developers.
Regardless of whether fans subscribe to the theory that the flesh belongs to the Fell God Marika defeated, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree offers enough content to overshadow such a puzzling scene. Despite some initial feedback suggesting that the expansion's balance needed fine-tuning, the community has come to appreciate it as a cohesive experience that enhances the main game. Fans can only hope that FromSoftware has more plans in store for The Lands Between.
