Introduction

Jerboa is a user-friendly app created by the developers of Lemmy, a decentralized alternative to Reddit. This free and open-source software ensures that there are no advertisements, monetization, or venture capital involved. Similar to popular sites like Reddit, Lobste.rs, and HackerNews, Jerboa allows you to subscribe to forums of your interest, engage in discussions by posting links and comments, as well as vote on content. However, behind the scenes, Jerboa differentiates itself by offering a federated server system. This means that anyone can easily run their own server, and all these servers are connected to the same universe, known as the Fediverse. Experience the freedom and interconnectedness of Jerboa by downloading it now.

Features of this app:

- Federation: One of the key features of Jerboa is its federation capability. It operates on a federated architecture similar to email, where anyone can set up their own server and connect it to the same Fediverse. This allows for decentralized hosting and ensures that the platform remains resilient and censorship-resistant.

- Alternative to Reddit: Jerboa serves as a federated alternative to Reddit, providing users with similar functionality and features. Users can subscribe to forums they are interested in, post links and discussions, vote on content, and engage in comments and discussions.

- Free and Open-source Software: Jerboa is developed by the same team behind Lemmy and is free and open-source software (FOSS). This means the software can be freely used, modified, and shared by anyone, promoting transparency and community collaboration.

- No Advertising or Monetization: Unlike many popular social media platforms, Jerboa does not rely on advertising or monetization strategies. This ensures a clean and distraction-free user experience without intrusive ads or tracking.

- Privacy and User Control: Jerboa emphasizes user privacy and control. By decentralizing the platform, users have more control over their data and who can access it. Additionally, all instances of Jerboa are connected through the Fediverse, enabling users to interact with a wide network of communities while maintaining their privacy.

- Easy Server Setup: Setting up a Jerboa server is designed to be simple and accessible. With the easy-to-use server setup process, anyone can create their own instance of Jerboa and contribute to the Fediverse.

Conclusion:

Jerboa is a free and open-source alternative to Reddit that operates on a federated architecture. With its decentralized nature and emphasis on privacy and user control, it offers a refreshing and community-driven social media experience. Jerboa's key features include its federation capability, resemblance to Reddit functionality, absence of advertising, promotion of user privacy and control, and the ease of setting up individual servers. Join Jerboa to explore a new kind of social media platform where the community takes center stage.

  • It has it's issues (no word filtering and constant crashing) but I am willing to live with that for the excellent themes, smooth scrolling, and comfortable ui. RIP RIF and Reddit as a whole.

  • I like it, very non-obtrusive UI. Edit: the below issue has been fixed, nice work! However, it would be great if I could disable the flashy transition between screens, it hurts when using dark mode.

  • Like any new app it took me a little bit to get used to, but it works well! I feel like the user interface can use some minor tweaks but overall I like the level of customization for both look and functions.

  • Wish it was a bit more compact, similar to RiF. I feel like there could be better utilization of screen real estate. One of my main issues with the official reddit app is only being able to see 1-2 posts at a time on screen. I think this app displays ~4.

  • Getting errors when searching for Lemmy instances, clicking comment responses in my inbox doesn't take me to the response so idk what I said initially, cancelling out of setting a profile pic exits the settings entirely without saving any changes to other fields, looks like this app isn't updated regularly...

  • Edit: App doesn't crash anymore but still plagued with loading issues and refreshing content, though that may be more a Lemmy thing. I would like to use the app, but it keeps crashing on launch.
