The highly anticipated remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) has faced a rocky road since its announcement back in 2021. Despite its troubled development, a recent investment report from Saber Interactive confirms that the project is still very much in progress.

Initially, the remake was being handled by Aspyr Media, but development was shifted to Saber Interactive in 2022. This move was made by Embracer Group, the parent company of both studios. Earlier this year, Saber Interactive split from Embracer Group, taking the KOTOR remake with them.

Although there hasn’t been a significant update since the teaser trailer dropped in 2021, the game remains in active development. Saber Interactive recently secured funding from Aleph Capital Partners and Crestview Partners—two major investment firms—to help accelerate the company's growth and pay off existing debts.

KOTOR Remake Still a Priority

In a joint statement by Saber Interactive and the investment firms, the studio highlighted its ongoing projects, stating: "...and an exciting slate of upcoming titles including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jurassic Park: Survival, John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, RoadCraft, Tempest Rising, and many others."

Notably, appearing prominently in this list is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which suggests that it is still a priority for the studio. However, specific details on the development team or whether Saber Interactive is working on the project internally remain undisclosed.

Six Years of Development with No End in Sight

With the remake now six years into development, fans have been left wondering when they can expect more concrete news. Earlier this year, Saber Interactive’s CEO, Matthew Karch, addressed the ongoing speculation by stating, “It’s clear and obvious we are working on [the remake]. It’s been in the press numerous times. What I will say is that the game is alive and well, and we’re dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations.”

While there’s no release date in sight just yet, the fact that Saber is still committed to the project should be reassuring for fans eager to see this iconic RPG brought to life once again.

Saber Interactive is also celebrating the successful release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which has become the most-played Warhammer game on Steam to date, further solidifying the studio’s credibility as it works on other major projects.
