Frostpunk 2: Creating Trails and Skyways

In Frostpunk 2, as players venture into the Frostland, they’ll come across various Outposts and points of interest where they can gather valuable resources. However, to extract those resources, players need to link the location to a City or another Settlement using either a Trail or a Skyway. This guide will walk you through the process of building Trails and Skyways in Frostpunk 2, ensuring you can efficiently connect and extract resources from Frostland’s key areas.

While Outposts are essential for rapid resource extraction, there are also Harvesting Areas in Frostpunk 2 that can be worked without needing a Trail or Skyway. Although these areas may not yield resources as quickly as Outposts, assigning Frostland Teams to them can still be a worthwhile strategy.

How to Build Trails

To start building a Trail, click on the point of interest that you wish to connect. This action will open up the location’s information panel, and from there, you’ll want to click either "Connect Path" or "Connect Trails" at the bottom.

Alternatively, you can begin by selecting the "Trail Construction" icon located in the bottom-right corner of your screen, then clicking on the post at your chosen point of interest.

Once you’ve initiated the process, you’ll be able to guide a line originating from the point of interest. The objective is to connect this line to a post located on the edge of a City or to an existing Trail. This is done in segments, and here’s how you can build it step-by-step:

1. Move your cursor near the point of origin to reveal a dot matrix.

2. Click on one of the dots that leads in the direction of the City (or another Trail already connected to it).

3. Continue selecting dots to expand the matrix and keep heading towards the City or Trail.

4. Once you’ve reached the post near the City (or connected Trail), click on it and then select the checkmark that appears to finalize the connection.

It’s important to note that every segment of the Trail requires resources such as Heatstamps, Prefabs, and time. During this process, your Frostland Teams will be busy constructing the Trail, so it’s wise to minimize the number of segments where possible. One strategy to reduce segments is to route your Trails near the posts scattered across Frostland, as this expands the dot matrix significantly.

If you don’t have enough Frostland Teams to complete the Trail, you can solve this by constructing another Logistics District in your City. Alternatively, you can research a building that provides additional Frostland Teams (found in the Frostland section of the Idea Tree) and add it to an existing Logistics District.

While Trails are crucial for connecting resources, Skyways offer even more advantages, including:

- Certain Outposts can be upgraded into Settlements, allowing for greater material production if they are connected to a City by Skyway. However, this upgrade can only be performed after researching "Settlement Heating" in the Heating section of the Idea Tree.

- Skyways significantly boost the resource output of connected Outposts.

- More resources can be transferred between a Colony and a City when they are linked by a Skyway.

To construct a Skyway, you’ll first need to research "Skyways" in the Frostland section of the Idea Tree. Once researched, a "Skyways Construction" icon will appear in the bottom-right corner of your screen when you’re viewing the Frostland map. From there, click the icon, select the post at the point of interest you wish to connect, and follow the same process you used for creating Trails.
