Bungie has unveiled its ambitious plans for Destiny 2 starting in 2025, with "Codename Frontiers" marking the next era for the game. This new phase will introduce two expansions, four major free content updates, and a host of additional features. After the successful release of The Final Shape expansion, which concluded the epic Light and Darkness saga, Destiny 2 has faced several challenges.

The game has seen a decline in its player base, and Bungie recently dealt with significant layoffs. This has led to growing concerns about the game's future among fans.

Rumors circulated that Bungie might shift its focus toward smaller, replayable content rather than massive expansions like The Final Shape. While players speculated about the game’s direction beyond the current episodic content, Bungie began teasing the community with hints about what’s next for Destiny 2.

Though the specifics were kept under wraps, Bungie has now officially lifted the veil on Codename Frontiers, giving players a glimpse into what’s coming in the summer of 2025.

After promising a big Destiny 2 announcement for September 9, Bungie revealed its vision for the future in a detailed developer blog. Codename Frontiers represents a fresh chapter for the game, taking players on a "weird and exciting" new journey.

Two new expansions are slated for release, with the first, Apollo, launching in the summer of 2025, followed by Behemoth in the winter. Bungie cautioned that these expansions would be more medium-sized, in contrast to larger expansions like The Final Shape. By scaling down, Bungie hopes to free up resources to experiment with new formats.

Tyson Green, Destiny 2's game director, offered further insights into Codename Frontiers. The familiar three-episode structure will evolve into four major content updates, arriving every three months, accessible to all players.

These updates will be reminiscent of the game’s seasons and episodes, packed with new activities, rewards, events, and other features. One key focus of Codename Frontiers is to give the game a much-needed refresh, making Destiny 2 easier to recommend to new players by removing some of the complexities and barriers that have developed over time.

To achieve this, Bungie plans to make significant changes to the core gameplay. The studio acknowledged that Destiny 2 has become overly complex, with hundreds of activities to choose from, which can overwhelm players.

One major change will be a modernization of the Director’s UI, making it faster and easier for players to find activities. Bungie also plans to add customizable difficulty options for activities, allowing players to adjust the challenge and earn more valuable rewards, such as artifice armor, by opting for higher difficulty levels.

A New Narrative Direction with Codename Apollo

Bungie concluded the developer blog with a note from Alison Lührs, Destiny 2's narrative director, shedding light on the upcoming Apollo expansion. She revealed that the next Destiny 2 episodes, Revenant and Heresy, will hint at the franchise’s new direction.

Apollo promises to be a nonlinear, character-driven adventure, offering players the freedom to tackle missions and activities in any order they choose. This is a shift from the more linear narrative style of The Final Shape. While the story will still make sense from a narrative perspective, players won’t be restricted by time-gated content. Instead, progression will be determined by the player’s own journey, not by waiting for the next update.

With Codename Frontiers on the horizon, Destiny 2 players have much to look forward to in 2025, from exciting new expansions to game-altering updates that aim to make the game more accessible and engaging for all.
