Genshin Impact has been a major player in the gaming world for several years, but as with any game, its run won’t last forever. While HoYoverse hasn’t fully revealed its long-term plans, it’s clear that the game is approaching the final chapters of its story. With this in mind, it's crucial that the upcoming characters, especially those from the Snezhnaya region, truly stand out and leave a lasting impression.
Despite its massive success, Genshin Impact hasn’t been without its criticisms. One ongoing discussion revolves around character design. Although the game features a diverse world, some characters tend to feel a bit too similar to one another. Fortunately, the upcoming release of Snezhnaya presents the perfect opportunity to break this trend and offer something truly fresh.
Set in the expansive world of Teyvat, Genshin Impact allows players to explore various regions and recruit a wide range of characters through its gacha system. Each character wields a Vision, granting them control over one of Teyvat’s seven elemental forces. Additionally, the world is divided into seven distinct regions, which have been introduced in the game through a series of major updates.
As the game nears its end, the pace of new region releases has been quickening. The most recent region, Natlan, has just been introduced, and after its storyline concludes, the game will move on to Snezhnaya. Known as the home of the Fatui Harbingers, the main antagonists of Genshin Impact’s story, Snezhnaya is the last major region left to explore before the game shifts its focus to Khaenri'ah. This suggests that Genshin Impact could be entering its final stretch of major updates.
First impressions matter, but the final impression can be just as impactful. As the last of the seven regions for players to explore, Snezhnaya must build on the lessons learned from previous regions. Since it’s home to the game's primary villains, Snezhnaya’s new playable characters should reflect this depth and complexity.
That doesn’t mean every new character needs to be tied to the Fatui Harbingers or even serve as antagonists. However, the Harbingers themselves have become fan favorites precisely because they are so distinct in their personalities and designs. This level of individuality should serve as a model for the new characters that join Genshin Impact’s already vast roster.
With such a large number of playable characters already in the game, it’s understandable that some designs have started to blur together. However, Snezhnaya offers the perfect opportunity to break away from those patterns. Not only is the region's setting drastically different from any that have come before, but this may be one of the last chances for the developers to push the boundaries of character design.
Snezhnaya’s icy climate, for example, could inspire unique design elements. Regions like Sumeru and Natlan are characterized by their warmer environments, and this is often reflected in the clothing and aesthetics of the characters from those regions. In contrast, Snezhnaya, the land of Cryo, opens up possibilities for characters with styles suited to its harsh, frozen landscape. While Genshin Impact has faced challenges in achieving true diversity in character designs, Snezhnaya offers an opportunity to aim for greater cultural and environmental accuracy.
There are many creative directions the developers could take, but the key to success will be breaking away from established tropes. The Fatui Harbingers provide an excellent template, with their striking designs and distinct personalities. As Genshin Impact moves forward, it’s crucial that its new characters stand apart not only from each other but also from what players have seen before. This is the moment for Snezhnaya to shine and make a lasting impact on the game’s legacy.
