Dragon Age: The Veilguard has provided a comprehensive look at its character progression, talent system, and item enhancements. While the shift towards action-oriented combat in The Veilguard stirred up significant discussion, players are gradually embracing this new direction following a series of detailed gameplay previews. The latest showcase highlighted the Qunari Mage class, although opinions suggest that the Warrior reveal was a fan favorite. Nonetheless, the true test of these classes will come with the game's official release.
Despite the combat in The Veilguard marking a significant departure from the Origins formula, the complexity of character builds remains just as intricate, if not more so. The game's talent system is designed like a web or constellation, starting players in the center and allowing them to navigate towards various class specializations. Mages might choose the Death Caller path, while Rogues can become Veil Rangers. These specializations are inspired by factions that players will encounter during their journey across Northern Thedas.
This elaborate talent system is only the beginning. The talent tree nodes are categorized into different types of progression for the character Rook. Diamond nodes represent active abilities, while circle nodes are reserved for major passives or upgrades. This system allows players to modify and evolve basic class skills, offering a level of customization that extends beyond simply selecting one of the nine specializations available in The Veilguard.
Though Rook won't have access to the services of Sandal, rune enchantments make a return in The Veilguard. Players can enhance their gear by combining items with duplicates, which not only boosts their stats but also unlocks additional properties. For more advanced upgrades, Rook can visit the Caretaker's Workshop located in The Lighthouse—a place within the Fade that also serves as a hub for the game's companions.
The Caretaker offers two main services: upgrading an item's power and applying enchantments. While the power upgrades are straightforward, enchantments provide a more nuanced approach to itemization. Players can improve the Caretaker by collecting mementos scattered throughout Northern Thedas, which in turn unlocks new enchantments. These enchantments can be applied to both items and abilities, allowing for even finer customization of Rook's class. It’s important to note that each item or ability can only hold one enchantment at a time.
Combat in Dragon Age: The Veilguard will feature a Primer and Detonator system, promoting synergy among classes and companions—a clear evolution from the mechanics seen in Mass Effect 3. Players will have the opportunity to experience all these new features firsthand when the game launches on October 31, 2024.
