A mysterious post from Sega has sparked excitement among fighting game enthusiasts, leading many to believe the publisher is teasing the arrival of Virtua Fighter 6. In 2023, Sega surprised fans by announcing several revival projects for its long-dormant franchises, igniting hope for more beloved titles to return.
Among the most notable revivals are Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and Streets of Rage. However, many fans had hoped for a resurgence of the Virtua Fighter series as well. Although no official announcement has been made yet, the demand for a new installment is palpable.
Sega has even acknowledged the potential for a new Virtua Fighter game. Shuji Utsumi, co-COO of Sega Corporation and CEO of Sega of America, indicated that the classic 3D fighting game series is overdue for a revival. The last mainline entry, Virtua Fighter 5, was released in 2006 and later remade using the Dragon Engine, re-emerging as Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown on PlayStation 4 in 2021.
Recently, Sega shared a cryptic image on its official Twitter account, prompting gamers to speculate that it might be hinting at Virtua Fighter 6. The tweet appeared on the Japanese Sega account and featured the word "Sega" repeated 54 times, challenging fans to identify the one that stood out. Notably, in the second row and second column, "Sega" is rendered as "SE6A," leading to widespread belief that the inclusion of the number 6 could signal a new installment in the Virtua Fighter series.
Speculation about a new Virtua Fighter game has been brewing throughout 2024, with rumors suggesting it may take on an esports focus akin to the competitive shifts seen in Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. Some reports hint at the possibility of a reboot that pays homage to the original 1993 arcade game.
Despite claims from sources suggesting that a reveal was imminent this year, recent developments have cast doubt on their reliability. If Sega’s latest post indeed points toward Virtua Fighter 6, it's intriguing that the publisher opted not to unveil anything during the September 2024 Tokyo Game Show or Evo 2024, which would have garnered significant attention for the project.
The most likely venue for a potential Virtua Fighter announcement now seems to be The Game Awards 2024, especially since Sega revealed several classic revivals during last year's event. However, fans are advised to manage their expectations, as this post could ultimately refer to something less significant.
