In a newly released trailer, Mortal Kombat 1 has revealed Ghostface's chilling fatality ahead of the character’s debut. Since Warner Bros. took over the Mortal Kombat series, the franchise has featured a wide range of iconic film characters. Starting with the 2011 reboot, players have had the chance to play as characters like Homelander, Leatherface, the Xenomorph, and many more through downloadable content (DLC). Mortal Kombat 1 continues this trend, introducing even more popular figures from movies and television.
On September 24, the highly anticipated Khaos Reigns DLC will add three new fighters to the roster: Sektor, Cyrax, and Noob Saibot. Another wave of characters, including Ghostface, the T-1000, and Conan the Barbarian, will be arriving later. NetherRealm Studios has been gradually teasing these new additions through various trailers, but Ghostface has only recently been shown in action.
On September 18, fans got their first full glimpse of Ghostface's brutal fatality in a trailer for the upcoming DLC. This gruesome finishing move reflects the character’s roots in the horror genre, even featuring a shot of Ghostface's reflection in his victim’s eyes as he moves in for the final blow. Ghostface first terrorized audiences in the 1996 classic horror film Scream, which remains a highly regarded staple of the genre. The Scream series has continued to evolve, with multiple sequels and different characters donning the infamous mask and cloak. The most recent installment, released in 2023, was well-received by both fans and critics alike.
Alongside the debut of Ghostface, the Khaos Reigns DLC will reintroduce animalities—a feature that’s been missing from the franchise since Mortal Kombat 3 in 1995. Animalities allow characters to transform into powerful beasts to deliver a savage finishing blow, adding a new layer of brutality to the game. This feature will be available for free to all players who own Mortal Kombat 1 when the DLC drops later this month.
Over the years, Mortal Kombat has included a diverse array of guest characters from Warner Bros.' extensive movie library, such as the Terminator, Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street, The Joker, and Spawn. The franchise itself has even expanded into cinema, beginning with the original 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, followed by a 1997 sequel. In 2021, Warner Bros. rebooted the Mortal Kombat film series, offering fans a fresh take on the iconic video game adaptation. The next installment of this film series is slated for release in October 2025.
With the return of beloved features and the introduction of legendary characters like Ghostface, Mortal Kombat 1 promises to deliver even more thrills for fans of both the game and the horror genre.
