Undead Labs, the studio behind State of Decay 2, has announced that the popular survival horror game will soon conclude its cycle of content updates as the team shifts focus to State of Decay 3. The sequel to State of Decay 2 was first revealed in 2020 during the Xbox Games Showcase.

Since its release in 2018, State of Decay 2 has seen extensive post-launch support from Undead Labs, including 37 different updates and a graphical overhaul in 2020 with the State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition. This extensive support is now drawing to a close.
Undead Labs has confirmed that Update 38 will be the final content update for State of Decay 2. The decision to halt further updates comes as the studio reallocates its resources to developing State of Decay 3, aiming to create the ultimate zombie survival simulation in the franchise. Despite the end of new content and official support, State of Decay 2 will remain available on existing platforms, and player progress, including saved games and communities, will not be affected. The studio also mentioned the possibility of a final hotfix if necessary.

The last update for State of Decay 2 will address several long-standing issues and introduce quality-of-life enhancements. Notably, players will permanently unlock previously seasonal or gated content, such as the Wizard Van, which will become accessible as loot after Update 38. Additionally, the Bounty Broker bounty packs will continue to cycle automatically. The final update is slated to roll out later this year, though no specific release date has been provided for State of Decay 3.

Over the years, State of Decay has established itself as a notable entry in the zombie genre. Despite a rocky start for State of Decay 2, Undead Labs has progressively refined the game and built a substantial player base. As anticipation builds for the next installment, fans hope that State of Decay 3 will benefit from the lessons learned and deliver an exceptional gaming experience.
