After six years and nearly 40 updates, State of Decay 2 is gearing up for its final content update, expected to drop later this year.

In an official post on the State of Decay website, developer Undead Labs confirmed they are now shifting their efforts toward State of Decay 3, which was first teased in 2020 and received a fresh trailer in June.

"We've introduced new modes, maps, difficulty levels, storylines, characters, weapons, cosmetics, bounties, vehicles, events, traits, and much more — all with the aim of perfecting the experience," the team shared. "Every update has been driven by your feedback, fixing bugs, adding wishlist features, and improving quality of life. It's been a labor of love because we know how much you enjoy the game."

Titled Update 38, the final patch for State of Decay 2 will focus on addressing some long-standing issues and implementing further quality-of-life enhancements. After this update, all previously gated seasonal content will be permanently unlocked for every player.

While no new content will be added post-Update 38, State of Decay 2 will remain available for both purchase and play. However, the development team will no longer provide support or fix bugs once the update rolls out, so if there are any critical issues you want addressed, now is your last chance to voice your concerns.

"We understand how much this world and community mean to you," Undead Labs continued. "Though you've enjoyed State of Decay 2 for years, we're also deep into the next evolution of the franchise with State of Decay 3. Our goal is to create the greatest zombie survival simulation yet."

Details on State of Decay 3 have been sparse, but Undead Labs previously hinted that the game will be set "years after the zombie apocalypse nearly wiped out humanity." With State of Decay 2 no longer consuming the bulk of the studio’s resources, we can likely expect more frequent updates and insights into the upcoming sequel soon.
