Finding the Addled Frog in Baldur's Gate 3

The Addled Frog can be found in the Sunlit Wetlands, an area filled with secrets. As players venture into the Wetlands, they’ll come across an argument involving Auntie Ethel and Mayrina’s brothers. Your response to this confrontation doesn’t impact the frog quest, so you can handle it however you like.

Eventually, you'll need to follow Auntie Ethel further into the Wetlands to uncover Mayrina’s fate. In the northeastern part of this area, you'll encounter the Addled Frog. If you have already dealt with Auntie Ethel, the frog will greet you warmly. If not, it might see you as an enemy and be ready to fight.

How to Assist the Addled Frog

Talking to the Addled Frog will quickly reveal that it’s in a dire state. It repeats the phrase “Green leaves, Shallow water…” over and over. If you persist in questioning it, the frog may become hostile unless you pass an Animal Handling check. Passing the check will prompt the frog to tell you to leave it alone; so if you're looking to avoid a fight, it’s best to step back.

From your conversation with the Addled Frog, you’ll realize that defeating Auntie Ethel is the key to helping it. Once you've dealt with or removed the Hag from the picture, you can return to the frog. Remember, you’ll need to use the Speak with Animals spell or have a Potion of Animal Speaking to communicate.

If you’ve defeated Auntie Ethel, the frog will be freed from her spell and express its gratitude. Even if you haven't defeated her but have managed to get her out of the way, the frog will still be cursed but will lead you to its hidden treasure. As a reward for your help, you’ll receive some Gold, a Scroll of Detect Thoughts, and a Scroll of Shocking Grasp.

Combat with the Addled Frog in BG3

If you push the frog too much before dealing with Auntie Ethel, you might end up in a battle with one of BG3’s most unique foes. The Addled Frog has an Armor Class of 22 and a Dexterity score of 20, making it both hard to hit and tricky to engage due to its special defenses. The frog's “Reflective Mucus” condition boosts its Armor Class by 2 and causes it to reflect the first projectile aimed at it back at the attacker, after which the mucus dissipates. While you might think melee attacks are the answer, the frog also has a “Toxic Secretions” ability, which forces enemies to pass a Constitution saving throw or suffer Madness for two turns when making a melee attack.

In summary, the Addled Frog can bounce back your initial projectile and inflict Madness on melee attackers. Thankfully, it only has 12 HP, so a few solid hits will bring it down. Using a Magic Missile spell is a good tactic—while the first missile will reflect, the subsequent ones will effectively reduce its health.
