Fans of Dead by Daylight can now get a sneak peek at the upcoming spinoff game, The Casting of Frank Stone, thanks to a newly released demo. Developer Supermassive Games has made a short demo available for free on Steam, along with an official trailer for the game, which serves as a prequel to the popular asymmetrical multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight.

Supermassive Games is renowned for its cinematic horror games that blend interactive storytelling with player-driven choices, impacting which characters make it to the end. The studio first gained widespread recognition with the PlayStation 4 exclusive Until Dawn, followed by the successful horror anthology series The Dark Pictures Anthology and the game The Quarry.

Now, fans can get a taste of Supermassive’s first venture into the Dead by Daylight universe by trying out the demo for The Casting of Frank Stone on Steam. The demo allows players to navigate the prologue, taking on the role of Sam Green, a police officer investigating the case of a missing child. This storyline eventually ties into the eerie world of Dead by Daylight.

Although the demo offers a glimpse of what to expect from The Casting of Frank Stone ahead of its official release on September 3, progress made in the demo won’t carry over to the full game. Nevertheless, the demo provides ample replay value, letting players experiment with various choices to see the different outcomes, hinting at the depth and complexity of the first narrative-driven title in the Dead by Daylight series.

One of the standout features in The Casting of Frank Stone is the "cutting room floor" mechanic. This innovative feature allows players to revisit and alter specific decisions within each chapter without having to replay the entire episode. This makes exploring alternate story paths easier and offers opportunities to discover a range of collectibles and nods to the expanding Dead by Daylight universe.

Despite receiving mixed reviews for some earlier titles in The Dark Pictures Anthology, Supermassive has demonstrated a strong presence in the realm of choice-based horror games. Their prowess has earned them the trust of Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive, not only to handle its most successful IP but also to work on upcoming projects like a remake of Until Dawn and a new installment in the Dark Pictures series.
