Tekken 8 is currently experiencing another wave of review-bombing, primarily due to publisher Bandai Namco's controversial monetization strategies. Players are expressing their dissatisfaction on platforms like Steam, particularly concerning the game’s battle pass system that was implemented shortly after its release. The recent introduction of a new paid stage has reignited frustrations among fans, prompting renewed criticism of Bandai Namco's post-launch management of Tekken 8.

As the latest installment in the iconic fighting game series, Tekken 8 serves as a direct sequel to Tekken 7, which debuted over nine years ago. The anticipation surrounding Tekken 8 has been significant, and while the game has largely succeeded in delivering impressive visuals, engaging narratives, and, most crucially, solid gameplay, it has not been without its challenges.
Launched with 32 playable characters—29 of whom have appeared in previous installments—Tekken 8 has been designed to be accessible for newcomers. It features the most comprehensive training tools ever seen in a fighting game. However, ongoing issues regarding monetization have marred the experience for many players, leading to the latest backlash.
The most recent controversy stems from the game’s new stage, the Gemaki Temple, which is a paid addition to the roster, costing players $5. Although the price is relatively modest, fans are upset about the principle behind this decision. Tekken 8 currently holds a "Mostly Negative" rating on Steam, with its lifetime reviews categorized as "Mixed."

Players had anticipated that the new stage would be offered for free, especially since the previous new stage was released alongside Lidia Sobieska at no additional cost. This inconsistency has left many feeling perplexed and dissatisfied.
The uproar regarding Tekken 8’s monetization began when its cash shop was revealed post-launch. The game was released in both a $100 Deluxe Edition and a $110 Ultimate Edition, which promised additional costumes and the first year's worth of character additions. While Tekken 8 receives praise for its gameplay mechanics, stunning graphics, and satisfying combo system, players have struggled to overlook the prevalence of microtransactions.

Despite the focus on the new paid stage, the latest update also brought back fan-favorite character Heihachi Mishima, who many believed had met his end in Tekken 7. Heihachi is the third character available in the Year 1 character pass, joining Eddy Gordo and Lidia Sobieska. While there is more content on the horizon for Tekken 8, it remains uncertain how the game's reception will evolve within the community in the coming months and years.
