Detroit: Become Human, the acclaimed adventure game from Quantic Dream that allows players to influence the narrative through their choices, has officially sold over 10 million copies. Initially released in 2018 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, the game expanded its reach by launching on PC in 2019.
As Quantic Dream's fifth title, Detroit: Become Human refines the choice-driven gameplay formula that the French studio employed in previous games like Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain. Upon its release, the game garnered favorable reviews, achieving an average critic score of 79 on OpenCritic. In terms of sales, it quickly topped the charts in the UK, ultimately selling over two million copies by the end of its debut year.
According to Quantic Dream's CEO, Guillaume de Fondaumiere, the game’s impressive sales milestone consists solely of paid units, excluding downloads through PS Plus. In a heartfelt message on Twitter, he expressed gratitude to the player community, stating, “You mean the world to us and we couldn't have achieved this incredible milestone without every single one of you!”
Detroit: Become Human reached the 10 million mark just over six years after its original launch. The title previously took more than two years to hit five million sales, reaching that figure in 2020. In comparison, the game took roughly twice as long to sell an additional five million copies, culminating in its latest sales milestone. Fans took to the comments section of de Fondaumiere's tweet to celebrate the achievement, with one remarking, “One of the best games ever made.” Another praised the developers, stating, “You deserve it. Excellent game with a great cast.”
Some fans also used the opportunity to request improvements for the game, including a PS5 update and calls for a potential sequel to Detroit: Become Human.
Since announcing its plans to expand to multiple platforms with the assistance of NetEase in 2019, Quantic Dream took a significant step by becoming fully owned by the Chinese tech giant in 2022. The studio now operates as NetEase's first Europe-based game studio and is currently developing Star Wars Eclipse, another narrative-focused game in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. As players eagerly await Quantic Dream's next project, they can take advantage of a 70% discount on Detroit: Become Human on Steam, available until October 14.
