Black Myth: Wukong has quickly established itself as one of the top-selling games of 2024, surpassing 20 million copies sold within its first month. Released in August, the game received rave reviews and sold an impressive 10 million copies in just its first three days. At its peak, the game saw three million concurrent players, cementing its place as a frontrunner for Game of the Year alongside other big titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and Helldivers 2.
While often compared to the Soulslike genre, with titles such as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring, Black Myth: Wukong sets itself apart by placing a heavy emphasis on its grand, cinematic boss battles. The game is currently only available on PlayStation 5 and PC, though an Xbox Series X|S version is said to be in development by Game Science. There have been conflicting reports on why the Xbox version has been delayed, with some speculating that hardware issues with the Series S are to blame, while others believe a quiet exclusivity deal with PlayStation might be in play.
As the Tokyo Game Show 2024 continues to deliver exciting gaming news, including updates on Overwatch 2’s crossover with My Hero Academia and the return of classic Mana games on Xbox Game Pass, Black Myth: Wukong had its own moment in the spotlight. During a panel at the event, former PlayStation CEO Ken Kutaragi revealed that the game had reached another incredible milestone, selling 20 million copies in just one month across PC and PlayStation 5. This achievement solidifies Black Myth: Wukong as one of the fastest-selling new games of the year.
This sales milestone is even more remarkable given that Black Myth: Wukong is only available on two platforms: PlayStation 5 and PC. For comparison, Elden Ring, the 2022 hit from FromSoftware, reached 25 million sales as of June 2024 following the release of its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. With Elden Ring available on multiple platforms since its release, Black Myth's sales figures on just two platforms highlight its massive success. The numbers are expected to soar even further once the game finally launches on Xbox Series X and S.
As we approach the end of the year, many are wondering if Black Myth: Wukong will secure a spot in the Game of the Year nominations at The Game Awards 2024. Beyond the accolades, Game Science has already confirmed that they are working on downloadable content (DLC) for Black Myth: Wukong, which is slated for release in early 2025. This additional content is sure to boost the game’s already impressive sales even further. As for the Xbox version, Game Science has yet to make any official announcements regarding a release date.
