Firaxis Games has officially introduced the initial lineup of civilizations for Civilization 7. Players will have the chance to lead Aksum, Egypt, Maya, Maurya, and Rome from the Antiquity Age, as well as the Shawnee from the Exploration Age. Each civilization will bring unique abilities, buildings, and units that will play a crucial role in the early game of Civilization 7.
Set for release on February 11, 2025, Civilization 7 will be available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The game is set to feature a new three-age progression system—Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern—where civilizations will face various crises and players can "mix and match" leaders to personalize their empires. This new customization layer adds a strategic depth, although some traditional elements like barbarians and workers will be missing, hinting at a fresh approach for the series. The game will focus on the rise and fall of empires, including transitions such as Rome evolving into medieval powers.
In Civilization 7, the evolution of cultures over time will be a key theme. Firaxis Games has revealed the first six civilizations that players will encounter:
Aksum:
Renowned for its trade and resource management, Aksum's "Kingdom of Natural Wealth" ability enhances gold production in coastal and river cities. The civilization emphasizes cultural and economic growth, supported by unique naval units like the Dhow and the trade ship Tankwa.
Egypt:
Returning as a fan favorite from Civilization 6, Egypt excels in developing cities along rivers with its "Gifts of Osiris" ability, which boosts production near waterways. The civilization's iconic Pyramids provide economic advantages, while unique buildings such as the Mortuary Temple and the Medjay infantry bolster its military and cultural strengths.
Maya:
The Maya civilization shines in scientific advancement with its "Skies of Itzamna" ability, which enhances research from vegetated tiles. The Jaguar Slayer unit is a strong defender, and the Mundo Perdido wonder improves both science and happiness.
Maurya:
Combining military prowess with scientific growth, Maurya's "Dhamma Lipi" ability offers bonuses based on happiness. The Purabhettarah cavalry is effective in fortifications, while the Sanchi Stupa boosts cultural development.
Rome: Rome's "Twelve Tables" ability fortifies its capital and military through established traditions. The Legion unit and the Colosseum contribute to cultural and happiness benefits, making Rome a well-rounded civilization.
Shawnee:
Available exclusively through the Tecumseh and Shawnee Pack DLC. The Shawnee from the Exploration Age are able to utilize the "Nepekifaki" ability to boost food production along rivers. Using their Kispoko Nena'to infantry and the Serpent Mound wonder, they can enhance everything from combat, science, and even production.
With these initial civilizations, Civilization 7 promises a diverse range of play styles and strategies, setting the stage for an engaging new chapter in the series.
