With FromSoftware enjoying massive success from recent titles like Elden Ring, Armored Core 6, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, it’s easy for some fans to overlook Dark Souls 3. Praise often centers on games like Bloodborne and the original Dark Souls, leaving Dark Souls 3 somewhat in the shadows for newcomers to the studio's catalog. But neglecting this final entry in the Dark Souls trilogy would be a huge oversight.
Its masterful level design, exhilarating boss battles, and tight gameplay mechanics remain as impressive today as when it first launched. A revamped, all-inclusive edition of Dark Souls 3 for current-gen consoles—with added content—could be just what the game needs to recapture the spotlight.
While Elden Ring is widely regarded as FromSoftware’s crowning achievement, many fans still hold certain aspects of Dark Souls 3 in the same high esteem. The intricate level design and iconic boss fights, particularly those against the Nameless King and Slave Knight Gael, are still seen as high points in FromSoftware’s catalog. Even after eight years and numerous other releases, these encounters are hard to top.
Although Dark Souls 3 shares the core mechanics of its siblings, it avoids some of the missteps that held Dark Souls 2 back. While Dark Souls 2 is often considered the weakest in the series, largely due to its shift in direction under Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura rather than Hidetaka Miyazaki, its remastered version, Scholar of the First Sin, saw a much warmer reception. Improved visuals, adjusted enemy placements, and new content like an additional boss fight gave the game a second life, proving that remastered editions can succeed if done right.
Unlike Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3 has always been well-received, bolstered by its critically acclaimed DLCs, Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City. Yet, with the growing demand for Soulslike content, a remastered version optimized for modern consoles could offer an exciting new experience for both veterans and newcomers. Additions like reworked enemy placements, item adjustments, or even fresh boss encounters would make a remaster not just a visual upgrade but a true enhancement of the original.
Back in 2017, Dark Souls 3: The Fire Fades bundled the base game with its two DLCs, providing a complete package for players. However, this version offered no visual or gameplay enhancements. A modern re-release could easily address this by updating the visuals, but that alone might not be enough to attract longtime players who have already invested countless hours into the game. By adding new or reimagined content - such as shifting enemy locations or tweaking boss mechanics - FromSoftware could deliver a refreshing challenge that would appeal even to seasoned fans.
At the moment, FromSoftware’s next major project remains a mystery. Speculation swirls about potential titles like Dark Souls 4, Bloodborne 2, or an entirely new IP. While fans await the next big announcement, a revamped edition of Dark Souls 3 would serve as a delightful surprise, reminding players why the final chapter of the Dark Souls trilogy is a true masterpiece.
With Elden Ring continuing to dominate the spotlight, a new, enriched version of Dark Souls 3 would be the perfect opportunity to reintroduce one of FromSoftware’s finest works to the ever-growing Soulslike fanbase.
