In the rich tapestry of Ancient Greek mythology, the Hydra stands out as a legendary creature, making it a prized Myth Unit in Age of Mythology: Retold. As a powerful addition to the Greek civilization's roster, the Hydra brings both awe and strength to any army. This guide will provide you with essential information on how to unlock, build, and effectively use the Hydra to enhance your gameplay experience.

To access the formidable Hydra, players must navigate the pantheon of Minor Gods available in the game. Each civilization in Age of Mythology: Retold offers unique Myth Units, upgrades, and god powers tied to their chosen Minor Gods. For the Hydra, players need to progress to the Heroic Age and select Dionysus as their Minor God.
Dionysus is exclusive to the Zeus and Poseidon Pantheons. Therefore, players must choose either Zeus or Poseidon to gain the ability to recruit Hydra units during their game setup.

The Hydra, being a Myth Unit, can only be produced at a Temple. To train a Hydra, players will need the following resources:
- 250 Food
- 28 Favor
Additionally, the production of Hydras requires a certain number of free population slots. If Poseidon is chosen as the Pantheon, 4 population slots are required. However, if Zeus is selected, only 3 slots are necessary due to Zeus’s unique perk that reduces the population cost of Myth Units by 1.
1. Select Zeus or Poseidon as your Pantheon.
2. Construct a Temple.
3. Advance to the Heroic Age.
4. Choose Dionysus as your Minor God.
5. Train Hydras at the Temple.
| Zeus | Poseidon |
Hit Points | 800 | 800 |
Crush Armor | 80 percent | 80 percent |
Hack Armor | 60 percent | 60 percent |
Pierce Armor | 50 percent | 50 percent |
Speed | 4.0 | 4.4 |
Hack Damage | 30 | 30 |
Crush Damage | 15 | 15 |
Rate of Fire | 1.5 | 1.5 |
The Hydra boasts significant hack damage, making it effective in close combat. It is also adept at damaging enemy walls and buildings with its crush damage ability. The base stats for the Hydra can vary depending on the player's chosen Pantheon:
- Poseidon: Provides the Hydra with extra speed.
- Zeus: Reduces the population cost of the Hydra.

To further enhance Hydra units, players can research the Chthonic Rites technology, which allows Hydras to regenerate health at a rate of 2.5 hitpoints per second. Researching Chthonic Rites requires:
- 100 Gold
- 25 Favor
With these insights, you can now unlock, build, and maximize the potential of the Hydra in Age of Mythology: Retold, adding a legendary touch to your Greek army.
