Resident Evil 9 could take the franchise in numerous directions, thanks to the series' anthology-style approach, where each installment loosely connects to the others. This flexibility opens up a world of possibilities for the game’s mechanics and storyline.

However, Capcom also faces some important constraints, mainly in ensuring that the franchise's essence remains intact and tapping into the most creative potential. While Ethan Winters, introduced in Resident Evil 7 and continued in Resident Evil Village, brought a fresh perspective, he has often been seen as less compelling than iconic characters like Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield, who offer far more charisma. With Ethan's story seemingly concluded in Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 9 might need to bring back one of these beloved veterans.

Why Resident Evil 9 May Be Tied to a Classic Protagonist

The conclusion of the Winters storyline, marked by the end of Resident Evil Village and its DLC, signals a definitive end for this particular narrative arc. While Ethan’s vulnerability brought a unique dynamic to the series, his rather bland personality left much to be desired. Moving on from Ethan seems wise; he wasn't the most engaging character, and his story feels complete.

Although there's a slim chance Ethan could make a comeback in Resident Evil 9, the natural closure of his arc and the lack of widespread demand for his return make this highly unlikely.

Ethan’s role made sense initially—his quest to save his wife thrust him into the terrifying world of the Bakers and the subsequent events of Village. However, introducing another everyman character in Resident Evil 9 might be a stretch. It would require Capcom to create a new narrative that isn't directly connected to established entities like the BSAA, risking the momentum built in Village. Introducing another new protagonist would also mean balancing character development with expanding the series' broader lore, which might be more than the storyline can handle.

A Prime Opportunity to Bring Back Classic Resident Evil Characters

While playing as a highly skilled soldier like Chris Redfield might be less frightening than stepping into the shoes of an average person like Ethan, these action-hero characters are integral to the charm of Resident Evil. Characters like Chris, Leon, Jill, or even the less-utilized Claire are all fitting choices for Resident Evil 9, as they are more naturally suited to the chaotic and terrifying world of the series. Moreover, because these characters are tied to biohazards through their roles, they are better positioned to drive the main narrative forward, unlike the more intimate and isolated stories seen in Resident Evil 7 and Village.

If Resident Evil 9 indeed explores an open-world format, this would be an excellent chance to reintroduce players to one of these experienced protagonists, offering some familiarity within a new gameplay framework. The game could even revisit the multiple scenario approach or cooperative elements from earlier titles, reuniting several classic characters for a more immersive and connected experience.

By bringing back beloved characters and possibly integrating new gameplay mechanics, Resident Evil 9 could strike the perfect balance between innovation and nostalgia, ensuring its place in the hearts of long-time fans and newcomers alike.
