Capcom's acclaimed 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 is making its way to Apple devices on December 31. Widely regarded as one of the standout titles of 2019, this remake revitalized the original 1998 classic with a modern over-the-shoulder third-person perspective and stunning graphics powered by the RE Engine.
Resident Evil 2 also laid the groundwork for subsequent remakes from Capcom, including Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4, as well as EA's 2023 remake of Dead Space.
In recent years, Capcom has successfully ported several of its popular Resident Evil titles to Apple devices, with Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 4 remake both making their debut last year. This past summer, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard followed suit, though it experienced less impressive sales.
The trend isn't limited to the Resident Evil franchise; other major publishers are also bringing their games to Apple platforms. Notable titles like Sony's 2019 sensation Death Stranding and Ubisoft's latest offering, Assassin's Creed Mirage, are now available for mobile play.
Capcom has confirmed that the Resident Evil 2 remake will be the latest addition to the roster of games playable on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, launching on New Year's Eve, December 31. Fans eager to dive into the horror experience will need an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, or a newer model to run the game.
For iPad and Mac users, an M1 chip will be the minimum requirement to fully enjoy Capcom's terrifying masterpiece. Similar to other Resident Evil titles, players on iPhone and iPad will have the option to connect a Bluetooth controller, in addition to using standard touch controls.
While many of Capcom's top Resident Evil remakes and mainline games have now transitioned to Apple devices, the 2020 remake of Resident Evil 3 has yet to make the leap. Although it may not have garnered the same level of affection as its predecessor, Resident Evil 2, it still merits a place among the franchise's notable titles on the iPhone.
As major triple-A publishers increasingly focus on mobile audiences, Capcom's decision to bring its latest Resident Evil offerings to Apple seems strategically sound. Fans are left speculating whether other beloved franchises, such as Dead Rising or Devil May Cry, will eventually make their way to the iPhone.
Only time will reveal whether the Resident Evil 3 remake will follow its predecessor to iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Meanwhile, excitement is brewing for the next installment in the Resident Evil series, with rumors circulating last month about Resident Evil 9, tentatively titled Resident Evil Apocalypse.
Reports suggest that the new game may adopt a more open-world format, featuring iconic characters like Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, and the Redfields. As it has been a while since the release of Resident Evil Village, fans are eagerly awaiting concrete details about RE9 in the near future.
