Fans of the Galaxy Ranger faction have much to anticipate in Honkai: Star Rail, especially with the recent reveal of Rappa, the newest 5-star Imaginary-Erudition unit set to debut in Version 2.6. Not only is Rappa a skilled ninja with a flair for rapping, but she also brings a unique connection to the Galaxy Rangers.
Players first encountered this enigmatic faction during the Penacony arc, where they were introduced to Rappa’s teammate, Boothill, a cyborg cowboy. Although the Galaxy Rangers may initially appear to be a chaotic band of vigilantes, their notable achievements suggest there is more depth to their character.
In Honkai: Star Rail, factions are often united by the Paths their members follow—philosophies that provide guidance, blessings, and sometimes power. The Galaxy Rangers align with the Path of The Hunt alongside the Xianzhou Alliance, yet their objectives for following this Path are strikingly different.
The Galaxy Rangers comprise formidable fighters committed to delivering justice through their actions, often targeting violent criminals. Their allegiance to Lan, the Aeon of The Hunt, aligns them with the Xianzhou Alliance's efforts to eliminate the Denizens of Abundance. However, the Rangers pursue their own mission: to capture and punish evildoers by any means necessary. Both the Rangers' and the Alliance’s goals are deemed noble by Lan.
While the Galaxy Rangers are known for their individualistic nature, they adhere to two fundamental principles:
- Never harm the innocent.
- Never exploit the weak.
Though they seldom communicate, the Rangers unite in times of crisis. Each Ranger possesses a unique bullet relic that releases a flare when a member is injured or requires urgent assistance. Rangers who see the flare will travel from across the universe to provide help. Boothill notably used his flare during the climactic battle against Sunday in the Penacony arc.
The history of the Galaxy Rangers is shrouded in mystery, but three significant events highlight their battles against the Antimatter Legion and the disgraced Genius Society.
1. Operation Zulo: The Rangers successfully eliminated the formidable Lord Ravager Zulo, a notorious leader of the Antimatter Legion. A former Nameless who became a Ranger, Tiernan, played a crucial role in this operation by manipulating a deadly four-winged insect colony, The Swarm, to assault Zulo’s fleet.
2. Defeating Gaius the Usurper: Gaius, the successor to Emperor Rubert and a member of the Genius Society, aimed to replace organic civilizations with his “perfect and precise” Intellitrons. The Galaxy Rangers thwarted his plans, but the details of how they achieved this remain unclear.
3. Dr. Primitive’s Rebellion: Dr. Primitive, the 64 member of the Genius Society, attempted a project to "restore the ancestors of Vonwacq," the outcome of which remains uncertain. The Galaxy Rangers halted his scheme, safeguarding Vonwacq's ecosystem, but Dr. Primitive managed to escape and is still at large.
After confronting Dr. Primitive, the Galaxy Rangers’ activities diminished. Rumors circulated that he sought revenge by transforming some members into apes, but Boothill dismissed these claims. Moreover, many Rangers rallied to Boothill’s call during the Penacony arc.
Boothill is currently enacting his revenge against Oswaldo Schneider, the IPC’s Marketing Development Director, due to Schneider's alleged involvement in the destruction of his tribe. In his pursuit of Schneider, Boothill disrupted the IPC's operations in Pier Point, leading to him being hunted by the corporation. The epilogue of Penacony showcases his confrontation with IPC executive Aventurine as he seeks a way to confront Oswaldo.
Despite their inherently individualistic nature, the Galaxy Rangers often achieve their most significant successes when they work together. This dynamic raises intriguing possibilities for future storylines, particularly regarding Rappa or their leader, La Mancha, becoming integral to Boothill’s revenge plot.
