CI Games has announced that the much-anticipated sequel to last year’s Lords of the Fallen has officially entered full production and may arrive sooner than initially expected. This sequel serves as a reboot of the 2014 title and follows the release of Lords of the Fallen, which debuted last fall to a lukewarm response. The game was criticized for being buggy and feeling unrefined, but CI Games has worked diligently to enhance the experience through updates and patches. Alongside Lies of P, it was one of the most significant Souls-like titles of 2023.

Earlier this year, details emerged about the sequel, reportedly titled Death of the Fallen, which has been in development at CI Games. Initial rumors suggested a release date in 2026. It was later confirmed that CI Games secured a PC exclusivity agreement with Epic Games, meaning the sequel will not launch on Steam, at least initially. This arrangement aligns with Lords of the Fallen, which was among the first games built using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5.
In its recently unveiled roadmap for 2025-2028, CI Games confirmed that the sequel, internally named "Project III," is now in full production, validating earlier speculation about its 2026 launch. The document highlighted that the sequel will embrace a "more commercial art style and narrative" with elevated production values. Additionally, the game will feature shared-progression co-op gameplay, and CI Games plans to hold a full reveal sometime next year.

Considering the typical timelines for AAA game development, a three-year turnaround for a substantial Souls-like title is quite impressive, assuming that the production of Lords of the Fallen’s sequel proceeds without major setbacks. While a 2027 release seemed more likely, Souls fans will undoubtedly appreciate the prospect of Death of the Fallen arriving sooner. The mention of a "more commercial art style" raises questions about whether this means enhanced graphical fidelity or a completely different artistic direction.
CI Games also revealed that it is working on two additional titles: Project SGW Evolved, the next installment in the Sniper Ghost Warrior franchise, and Project H, a fantasy action RPG in development by Underdog Studio using Unreal Engine 5.

With all three projects being developed at different studios, their progress is unlikely to interfere with one another. Given the slated release for the Lords of the Fallen sequel in 2026, fans can look forward to its official unveiling next year. The major Souls game landscape appears quiet over the next couple of years, with FromSoftware yet to announce its next title and Neowiz quietly working on DLC for Lies of P. This timing could allow Lords of the Fallen’s sequel to carve out its own space in the gaming market, depending on how the 2026 release schedule shapes up.
