Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 faced some challenges but ultimately succeeded in reintroducing the Metal Gear franchise to modern platforms. After a year of patches, it stands as an excellent opportunity for today’s gamers to relive the golden age of Metal Gear. With Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater on the horizon, the beloved series, once helmed by Hideo Kojima, seems to have found stability under Konami’s current direction. The title "Volume 1" certainly hints that more exciting content is on the way.
Recently, producer Noriaki Okamura confirmed that Volume 2 is in development, promising to address issues from the first collection while tackling new challenges of bringing specific Metal Gear titles to modern systems. There are also strong hints that a long-awaited Metal Gear game could finally make its first appearance on current-gen hardware, something fans have been eagerly awaiting for over 15 years. Though not yet officially revealed, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 feels inevitable—and fans are already buzzing with anticipation for what it will include.
Topping most fans’ wishlists is the 2008 title Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which has remained locked to the PlayStation 3 for far too long. The growing frustration over its PS3 exclusivity has united both supporters and critics of the game, as all agree that it plays a crucial role in Metal Gear's storyline and deserves to be preserved. While it is possible to play MGS4 via emulation, an official release within the Master Collection would resolve this long-standing issue, allowing a broader audience to experience the game.
Another highly requested addition is Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, a game many were surprised to see missing from the first collection, especially since it was remastered for consoles in the past. Originally released on the PlayStation Portable in 2010, Peace Walker later made its way to the PS3 and Xbox 360. As a key narrative link between Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid 5, its omission felt significant. Its quirky gameplay and multiplayer aspects are still fondly remembered by fans, and with the Monster Hunter series now more popular than ever, promoting the hidden collaboration between the two games could give Master Collection Vol. 2 a major sales boost.
Despite the excitement surrounding Master Collection Vol. 1, it wasn't without its problems—issues that need to be fixed for the second installment. Bugs and performance issues affected all platforms, but the PC version faced the brunt of the trouble. The absence of native keyboard and mouse support, along with resolution adjustment options, left many players frustrated. While console gameplay and lightly modded PC sessions have since improved, Master Collection Vol. 2 should aim to launch with greater polish, especially for PC users.
To truly earn the title of “Master Collection,” the second volume needs to round out the remastering of Metal Gear's essential titles. Both Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Portable Ops Plus should be high on the list—Portable Ops serves as the prequel to Peace Walker, while Portable Ops Plus introduces unique mission content. Beyond these, other fan-favorite games like the Game Boy's Ghost Babel and the PSP’s card-based Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2 could be great bonus inclusions. Konami would earn massive respect if they restored online features for many of these games, with Metal Gear Online, bundled with the PS3 version of MGS4, being a particular highlight.
With expectations running high for Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, the hope is that it will deliver on fan desires while correcting the shortcomings of the first collection.
