After a decade of being confined to the PlayStation Vita, Freedom Wars is finally breaking free. Bandai Namco recently announced a remastered version of the beloved title, set to launch on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 in early 2025.
While fans are thrilled by the news, the announcement has also ignited fresh hopes for other classic Vita games to follow—chief among them, Soul Sacrifice.
The reveal of Freedom Wars Remastered took everyone by surprise when Bandai Namco dropped the news via a video shared on social media last Wednesday. Originally released in 2014 as a PlayStation Vita exclusive, the game will now make its long-awaited return to consoles in January 2025.
In Freedom Wars, players take on the role of a Sinner, sentenced to a million years in a dystopian future where survival means battling for freedom in a harsh, resource-starved world. Despite only managing to sell under 700,000 copies, the game amassed a passionate fan base who were ecstatic to see it revived. Reddit threads and social media were soon buzzing with celebrations following the announcement.
However, amid the joy surrounding Freedom Wars, fans couldn’t help but bring up another Vita gem—Soul Sacrifice.
Developed by Sony’s Japan Studio and Marvelous, Soul Sacrifice was a standout Vita title conceived by the legendary Keiji Inafune. With the remaster of Freedom Wars now confirmed, fans have taken the opportunity to make their voices heard, calling for Soul Sacrifice to be next in line.
Comments like, "Please do Soul Sacrifice next," flooded discussion forums, with players expressing just how well the game would resonate with today’s gaming landscape. One fan stated, "Soul Sacrifice would do great in today’s market," while another added, "Soul Sacrifice offers a unique gameplay experience with a compelling story that leaves a lasting impression. A remaster of Soul Sacrifice Delta would be incredible for modern players."
Though Freedom Wars is getting a second chance thanks to Bandai Namco, Soul Sacrifice is still in Sony’s hands. Fans are hopeful that Sony will release the rights in the same way they did for Freedom Wars, opening the door for another beloved title to make its way onto modern consoles.
With the demand growing, the future of Soul Sacrifice may just depend on whether Sony answers the call.
