Despite its famously rocky launch, Cyberpunk 2077 turned out to be a major commercial triumph for CD Projekt Red. The game's success was largely fueled by its post-launch content updates and persistent bug-fixing efforts, which won over many fans. Given the popularity of this sci-fi RPG, CD Projekt Red confirmed in 2022 that a sequel was in the works. Codenamed Project Orion, this highly anticipated follow-up began production earlier this year, with development being handled by the company's new North American studios in Boston and Vancouver. However, details about the sequel remain largely under wraps.
One major aspect still up in the air is the setting for Project Orion. While CD Projekt Red has yet to confirm specifics, many fans speculate that the game will return to Night City, the primary locale of both the game and its tabletop RPG predecessor. Yet, CD Projekt Red might choose to explore new territories beyond Night City, offering a fresh perspective on the Cyberpunk universe. Here are a few intriguing locations that could serve as the backdrop for Project Orion:
One intriguing possibility for Project Orion's setting is Hong Kong, also known as Ghost World. In the Cyberpunk universe, this city-state was devastated by a plague during the Fourth Corporate War of 2025, turning it into a deserted "ghost town." The only significant presence in the area is the engram of Alt Cunningham, Johnny Silverhand's former lover, who established an AI society within the remnants of the city. Although Hong Kong’s sparse human population might make it an unlikely main setting, it could provide a fascinating backdrop for side quests or expansions, similar to the Phantom Liberty DLC.
Another potential setting for the sequel is MetaKey, a city situated on a mobile, artificial island in the Gulf of Mexico. Serving as the headquarters for MetaCorp—an American corporation specializing in maritime construction and security—MetaKey is a major hub for Nomads. The city's lack of a formal judicial system means that virtually all activities, except for slavery and murder, are permitted. This lawless environment could offer a stark contrast to Night City, making it an exciting and unconventional choice for Project Orion.
Lastly, CD Projekt Red might consider Tycho, a city on the Moon, as a setting for Project Orion. Unlike other locations, Tycho is not on Earth but is located at the bottom of a lunar crater. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Cyberpunk world, alongside its sister city, Copernicus. Tycho boasts various attractions, including shopping malls, restaurants, museums, and vineyards. Its unique setting could provide an intriguing and diverse experience for players. Additionally, if Tycho were included, it might allow CD Projekt Red to revisit some concepts from the canceled moon expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.
As Project Orion continues to develop, these potential locations offer a glimpse into the expansive and diverse world that could await players. Whether revisiting familiar grounds or exploring new territories, the sequel promises to expand the Cyberpunk universe in exciting ways.
