HoYoverse’s latest release, Zenless Zone Zero, has quickly captured the attention of the live-service gaming community. With its vibrant street-punk aesthetic, a diverse roster of characters, and a smooth gameplay loop, the game has drawn comparisons to its HoYoverse predecessors. Much like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, Zenless Zone Zero impresses fans and newcomers alike with its fast-paced combat and immersive storytelling.
However, despite its growing popularity, some have labeled Zenless Zone Zero as a shallow, button-mashing hack-and-slash that relies too heavily on flashy combat and gacha mechanics. While there may be some truth to this, the game offers much more than what appears on the surface.
In typical HoYoverse fashion, Zenless Zone Zero offers a simple tutorial to introduce players to its mechanics and provides helpful hints throughout. But many of the game's deeper gameplay elements are left unexplained, rewarding players who are willing to experiment and discover hidden features for themselves.
At its core, the most critical mechanics in Zenless Zone Zero revolve around combat. Though the game can be enjoyable even at a basic level, players who explore beyond the surface will uncover advanced strategies that significantly enhance their experience.
One such hidden feature is the target lock-on mechanic, which the game doesn't explicitly point out. For those playing on consoles, pressing the right thumbstick allows players to focus on specific enemies based on the camera's angle. This feature can be remapped in the settings, giving players more control over their combat experience.
Another crucial aspect that Zenless Zone Zero doesn’t fully explore is the importance of squad synergy. While the game explains basic assists, it doesn't delve into the intricacies of how certain characters can enhance each other’s abilities. Some characters, for example, offer unique buffs in specific situations, adding layers of complexity to the gameplay.
The tutorial introduces assists by explaining how to trigger them after taking damage, but not all assists require this condition. For example, Lucy can tag in Ellen for a quick combo attack without needing to take damage, opening up a series of potential combos between characters like Ellen and Nicole for devastating results.
Players can also take control of which character enters the battle during assists by using the back bumpers (L2/LB or R2/RB), though the game leaves this mechanic largely unexplained. To truly maximize the damage potential of your squad, you'll need to experiment with these mechanics and find the best combination of skills for your playstyle.
In Zenless Zone Zero, visual cues are just as important as mastering the mechanics. Early in the game, players are taught to recognize the red-orange star flash indicating a boss is about to perform a parryable move. However, as the game progresses, bosses begin to punish overuse of parries, something the game doesn’t mention.
Additionally, a monochrome flash on the screen signals an incoming follow-up attack, which can be parried. These small but crucial visual hints add depth to combat, rewarding players who learn to read the battlefield.
While Zenless Zone Zero offers basic tips for beginners, it leaves much of the advanced gameplay to be discovered by the player. For example, detailed skill descriptions can reveal synergies between characters and provide insights into more efficient ways to approach combat.
This design choice, where players are encouraged to uncover deeper mechanics, has sparked discussion among the community. Some view it as a challenge, likening the experience to mastering complex games like Soulsborne titles, while others find it frustrating. Nevertheless, Zenless Zone Zero caters to both casual players who enjoy simple hack-and-slash gameplay and those who seek a more challenging, intricate experience.
Ultimately, Zenless Zone Zero offers more than what meets the eye. Players who take the time to explore its hidden mechanics will find a more rewarding and dynamic experience. Whether intentionally designed to appeal to different types of gamers or not, these unspoken rules add an extra layer of enjoyment for those willing to dig deeper.
In the end, Zenless Zone Zero has earned its reputation as a game with hidden complexities that surprise even seasoned players. For those willing to invest the time, the game reveals itself to be much more than a flashy, surface-level action title.
