Pokémon TCG World Champion Meets with Chilean President

The winner of the 2024 Pokémon TCG World Championships has been invited to meet with the President of Chile, a gesture that underscores both the significance of the champion's victory and the growing cultural importance of Pokémon and gaming as a whole.

The recent Pokémon World Championships saw Fernando Cifuentes emerge as the champion in the Pokémon TCG Masters division. Despite some controversies during the event, Cifuentes received praise from his fellow competitors and took home a $30,000 prize.

As a native of Chile, Cifuentes was invited by his country's President to the Presidential Palace, La Moneda, for a celebratory photoshoot, breakfast, and to receive personal congratulations. The government also extended invitations to the nine other Chilean players who advanced to the second day of the competition. Photographs from the event show Cifuentes and his fellow competitors meeting with the President, along with high-ranking officials, including the Minister General Secretariat and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

This kind of recognition is a rare honor, particularly for a Pokémon TCG champion. While dedicated fans of the game understand the high level of skill and strategy involved, it wasn’t too long ago that both video games and tabletop games were viewed skeptically by many adults, let alone by government leaders. However, times have changed. Gaming has become a widely accepted and celebrated part of modern culture, with eSports and competitive gaming earning significant recognition for the skills they require and the substantial prizes they offer. The popularity of gaming has reached such heights that eSports are now even considered for inclusion in the Olympics.

This memorable meeting with the President is surely a highlight for the 18-year-old Cifuentes, but his path to victory wasn’t without its challenges. Initially, Cifuentes lost to Ian Robb in the quarterfinals of the Masters bracket. However, Robb was disqualified shortly after his victory for making an obscene gesture on-camera while celebrating. This unexpected turn of events allowed Cifuentes to advance to the semi-finals, ultimately leading him to win the championship and claim the grand prize.

Cifuentes has already demonstrated exceptional skill as a competitor. Given his young age, it will be interesting to see whether he continues to pursue a career in Pokémon TCG or explores other opportunities. A future rematch between Cifuentes and Robb could certainly be an exciting spectacle for fans of the game.
