In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment during today's Nintendo Direct, Nihon Falcom unveiled an exciting new remake of Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for the Nintendo Switch.
The announcement, which was part of a rapid-fire sizzle reel, left fans in disbelief. The remake, officially named Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st, flashed across the screen so briefly that many viewers struggled to grasp what they had just seen.
On social media, the excitement was palpable. One fan tweeted, “What just happened??? Was that a Trails in the Sky remake hidden in a montage???” Another expressed frustration at the fleeting reveal, saying, “They’re remaking one of the greatest games ever, and it only got a quick spot in a sizzle reel!”
For those who tuned in to the Japanese Nintendo Direct stream, there was a more substantial reveal, showcasing an in-depth look at the gameplay. The visuals and design were described as nothing short of spectacular.
This remake is a monumental event for enthusiasts of the expansive RPG series who have longed for a Trails in the Sky release on the Switch. Originally debuting on PC and later arriving on PSP in North America in 2011, the Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky trilogy marked the beginning of a beloved saga. Although the series is available on Steam, finding it elsewhere has been challenging.
In our initial review, we praised Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for its engaging storytelling, dynamic combat, and immersive gameplay. “While this first chapter might not be the most groundbreaking JRPG ever, it delivers entertaining writing, engaging battles, and a captivating narrative,” we noted. “Its charm and entertainment value make it a worthwhile experience, despite its 50/50 split between combat and story that might not suit everyone.”
Trails in the Sky earned a dedicated following thanks to its rich world-building, memorable characters, and intricate battle system, leading to a franchise with numerous entries and multiple story arcs. The latest release in the series, Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak, came out earlier this year.
Alongside the Trails in the Sky remake, today's Direct also featured a slew of other announcements, including a new Castlevania collection and more. You can catch up on all the news from the Direct right here. Mark your calendars—the Trails in the Sky remake is slated for release in 2025.
