Tarneeb Game Explained: Rules, How to Play & Winning Strategies

What is Tarneeb?

Tarneeb is a trick-taking card game usually played by four players divided into two teams. The game uses a standard 52-card deck and revolves around winning “tricks” — sets of cards played in each round — by playing the highest card in the trump suit or the highest card in the lead suit if no trump is played.

What makes Tarneeb stand out is its bidding system and the partnership element, which brings a whole new layer of strategy beyond just the cards in your hand.

Setting Up the Game

Players: 4, in two teams of two

Deck: Standard 52-card deck

The dealer shuffles and deals 13 cards to each player. After looking at their cards, players take turns bidding how many tricks they think their team can win in that round, with bids ranging from 7 to 13.

Bidding Phase

The bidding starts with the player to the dealer’s right and moves clockwise. Each player can either pass or make a higher bid than the previous. The highest bidder wins the bid and gets to choose the trump suit— the suit that will outrank all others for that round.

The winning bid sets the minimum number of tricks that bidder’s team must win to score points. If the team fails to meet the bid, they lose points instead.

How to Play Tarneeb

The player who won the bid leads the first trick by playing a card. Other players must follow the suit led if they can. If they don’t have a card in that suit, they can play any card — including a trump card to try to win the trick.

The highest card in the trump suit wins the trick. If no trump is played, the highest card in the lead suit wins. The winner of each trick leads the next one. Play continues until all 13 tricks are played.

Scoring

After all tricks are played, the number of tricks won by each team is counted. If the bidding team wins at least as many tricks as their bid, they score points equal to the bid. If they fail, they lose that many points.

The opposing team scores points equal to the number of tricks they actually won.

Winning Strategies

1. Know When to Bid High – Don’t be afraid to bid aggressively if your hand is strong, especially with multiple high cards in one suit. But be realistic — overbidding can cost your team points.

2. Communicate Through Play – Since you can’t talk during the game, your card choices signal your hand’s strength and suit preferences to your partner.

3. Track Cards Played – Pay attention to which cards and suits have already been played. This helps you predict what opponents hold and plan your moves.

4. Use Trump Wisely – Don’t waste your trump cards too early. Save them to win important tricks or cut opponents’ winning chances.

5. Support Your Partner – Work with your teammate by playing cards that help them win tricks or save their trump cards for later.

Common Variations

Different regions have their own spins on Tarneeb, like adjusting the minimum bid, introducing penalties for overbidding, or changing how the trump suit is selected. Make sure to clarify house rules before playing!
