The team behind Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has indicated that remaking the first two entries in the Metal Gear Solid series would be a daunting task, requiring significant reworking.
Before the official announcement of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater last year, rumors about its development had been circulating for quite some time. While Snake Eater is one of the most beloved titles in the franchise, set prior to Solid Snake's missions, many fans questioned why it was chosen as the inaugural game for a remake.
This choice became clearer with the release of the first gameplay footage from Delta: Snake Eater, which showcased that the core mechanics of the original game remain intact, highlighting a graphical upgrade alongside several minor quality-of-life enhancements. Such improvements are much more feasible for Metal Gear Solid 3, sparking curiosity among fans about the potential for similar re-releases of earlier games in the series.
In a recent interview with Famitsu, the lead developers of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, including production producer Noriaki Okamura and creative producer Yuji Korekado, discussed the future of remakes in the Metal Gear Solid franchise. GamesRadar+ reported on their insights.
When asked about the possibility of other games in the series receiving the Delta treatment, Okamura (translated via Google) noted that remaking the original Metal Gear Solid or the earlier Metal Gear titles would pose considerable challenges. He explained that significant portions of those games would require complete reworking, making it a more complex task than the Snake Eater remake.
Okamura also expressed uncertainty about whether their team would be given the opportunity to develop the next Metal Gear Solid installment and how far they could push the boundaries with it. The team's primary focus, according to Korekado, is to ensure the longevity of the Metal Gear series for the next 10 to 50 years, which they believe will be more achievable with the transition to PC.
From these discussions, it appears that Metal Gear Solid 1 would necessitate a complete remake rather than just enhancements similar to those made for Snake Eater. While this doesn’t entirely rule out the possibility, it does suggest that a remake is considerably less likely than previously thought.
