Hideo Kojima has offered a glimpse into his next Xbox-exclusive horror title, OD, expressing the bold vision he has for the project. First announced by Kojima Productions in 2023, the game has remained shrouded in mystery, with little information revealed since its initial unveiling.
The world got its first look at OD during The Game Awards 2023, where a teaser trailer was shown. This marked the game’s debut and remains the only footage released to date. One of the most exciting aspects of OD is Kojima’s collaboration with acclaimed director Jordan Peele, famous for his horror films Get Out and Nope.
In addition to the powerhouse partnership, the game boasts an impressive cast featuring Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier in leading roles. Despite the anticipation, nearly a year has passed without any significant updates from Kojima Productions or Xbox Game Studios. However, Kojima recently shared his excitement for the game in an interview, raising the intrigue even higher.
In a conversation with Variety about the upcoming Death Stranding movie, Kojima briefly touched on OD, explaining his motivation behind the project. "I wanted to try something different from Death Stranding, so I teamed up with Microsoft to create OD. It’s a game, but not like any game you've seen before," Kojima teased. "I can’t give too much away, and it’s hard to put into words, but it’s a risky and challenging venture for me within the gaming space." Fans have speculated for some time that OD would push the boundaries of traditional gaming, and now it seems even Kojima himself is grappling with how to define its unconventional nature.
Kojima also shared how his collaboration with Jordan Peele came about. After hosting a podcast episode discussing Peele’s film Nope, Kojima discovered that the filmmaker was a fan of his work. A Zoom meeting was arranged, during which Kojima invited Peele to collaborate on OD, sparking what could be one of the most intriguing partnerships in gaming.
In addition to his remarks on OD, Kojima hinted at another project in the works titled Physint. Described as an espionage game, Physint is still in its early concept stages, leaving much to the imagination. However, it’s clear that OD is the more advanced of the two, though Kojima Productions may be prioritizing Death Stranding at the moment, as the studio aims for a 2025 release for the sequel.
Rumors surrounding OD have circulated since its announcement, with some speculating that it may feature a multiplayer component. Others have drawn comparisons to P.T., Kojima’s infamous demo for a canceled Silent Hill project. While OD is a completely new IP, many expect it to break new ground just as P.T. did. In the meantime, Kojima fans can look forward to the latest Death Stranding 2 footage, showcased at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show, which featured exciting gameplay and an enhanced photo mode.
With OD promising to push the limits of horror gaming, Kojima’s latest project is one to keep an eye on.
