The multiplayer action game Hood: Outlaws and Legends, inspired by the legendary figure of Robin Hood, is set to close its doors on February 18, 2025, as announced by its development team. Although it initially garnered praise for its intriguing concept, the game struggled with server problems, balance issues, and a dwindling player base.
Developed by Sumo Digital, known for their work on last year’s adaptation of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Hood: Outlaws and Legends is a third-person PvPvE heist game that pits two rival teams against each other in a race to steal treasure. Powered by Unreal Engine 4, the game saw a peak of approximately 11,500 concurrent players on Steam, according to analytics from SteamDB. However, it failed to maintain a vibrant community following its release in May 2021. With the announcement of its service closure more than three years post-launch, fans are reflecting on their experiences with what was intended to be a darker take on the Robin Hood narrative.
In their recent statement, the Hood: Outlaws and Legends team confirmed the game’s shutdown on February 18, 2025. After this date, players will no longer have access to the game or any additional content, including downloadable content (DLC). Like many contemporary live-service titles, the game featured microtransactions, such as battle passes and skin packs. Digital and physical sales will end on October 16, and players who purchased the game within the 14 days leading up to the announcement of its closure will be eligible for refunds until sales conclude.
Following the announcement of the game’s end of service, players took to social media to share their thoughts and experiences. Many expressed that the game had significant potential, while others remarked they did not regret their purchase despite its shortcomings. There was also a recurring request for an offline version of Hood: Outlaws and Legends to ensure it wouldn’t completely vanish when the servers shut down. Fans have previously revived abandoned games, such as the initiative that successfully preserved eight Mega Man mobile games that were exclusive to Japan.
In June, Sumo Digital faced layoffs that impacted its offices across Canada, the Czech Republic, India, Poland, and the United Kingdom. This developer, also known for titles like Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Crackdown 3, and LittleBigPlanet 3, is experiencing a challenging period as they move forward.
As the game approaches its closure, the community is left to ponder what might have been, while hoping for a chance to revisit the game in some form in the future.
